Company History
|
This firm was created after the breakup of Fabril Cotonera, S.A. an important firm with offices in Barcelona and a cotton yarn and fabric factory in Reus which was in operation from 1852 until 1892. In the latter year, due to a series of crises and a fire, the shareholder dissolved the company and transferred its industrial assets to Joan Tarrats and Josep Oriol Canals, who founded Tarrats i Canals, Sociedad en Comandita.
In 1901 the disagreements between the partners led Canals to set up his own firm in Barcelona, in the Sant Andreu district, between c/ Pacific and c/ Montlau and with offices at c/ Casp, 36.
On the death of the founder in 1915 the firm passed to his widow and his son Ignasi Canals under the name Viuda de José O. Canals. In 1922 it was renamed Algodonera Canals, sucesora de José O. Canals.
The firm made corduroys, twills, denim, canvases, and fabrics for the army. Algodonera Canals remained in operation until the recession of the 1950s. It was forced to close down at the end of the decade. |
